And so "the stones started rolling" ...
The construction boom that followed the reunification posed a significant challenge for the natural rock industry in the new federal states of Germany to quickly establish a productive
building material production.
The history of TERRA MONTAN® GmbH begins in 1990 with a chance encounter during a construction consultation for securing an old mining excavation in the Thuringian Forest. The engineering office was founded in 1991 by Dr. Berthold Weiß and Klaus Mrotzek. Their respective education and experience in the field of natural sciences and geotechnics enabled the coverage of a wide range of services right from the start.
The partners initially rented office space in a backyard in Suhl-Heinrichs (Meininger Str.). After relocating to the premises "An der Schneid," they began establishing a soil mechanics laboratory. The laboratory's high-quality requirements for test results and its technical equipment were eventually confirmed by the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS). Over the years, the company also provided inspection services for landfill remediation as an authorized inspection body.
In 1996, the engineering office acquired the mansion "Am Domberg," which still serves as the company's headquarters today. After extensive renovation and refurbishment of the building, the move to the new office space took place in 1997. Since then, the company has employed an average of 15 to 25 staff members. Depending on the qualifications of the employees, the various work areas have been continuously expanded.
While in the early 1990s, the focus was laid primarily on the application of the Federal Mining Act in the new federal states, the scope of tasks expanded to include issues related to the Federal Immission Control Act, monitoring of landfill measures, investigation of contaminated sites, and planning for remediation.
Over the years, the company has continued to evolve. Today, it is well-known beyond the borders of Thuringia for its complex and diverse engineering services.
Currently, TERRA MONTAN® not only supports numerous quarries but also handles complex geotechnical projects and various exploration projects. Planning, securing, construction supervision, remediation, and monitoring are the main tasks undertaken. Today, our loyal customer base includes not only small local businesses but also medium-sized companies, as well as large national and international corporations.
